The Hills' Caddie (September 2011)
From The Board
September – a very special month in many ways.
It marks the 9th anniversary of us occupying our new clubhouse facility and the 49th year of the birth of Acadian Hills Country Club. We are proud and honored to have been a part of the Acadiana community for these grand years and it is our intent to continue to be a partner in the business community for many more years. To all members and guests who have walked and traveled these playing grounds, our thanks for your patronage and loyalty.
Labor Day, the first Monday in September celebrates the working man – active and retired. Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country. All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation.
Labor Day is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity and well-being of our country.
September is the month that our youth are called back-to-school. This school year, students, drive yourself to higher academic achievement in the classroom and in your extracurricular activities. Become a good learner and become an active participant in your school, community and church. Until next summer, the swimming pool waters will once again retreat to a tranquil state, the fairway divots will slowly fill-in and the shouts of laughter will fade. Thanks for sharing your summer with us – good luck students and study hard. By all means be safe!
I would be remiss if I did not tip my hat to Marcella and her dedicated lifeguards for a job well-done. They provided for a very safe and enjoyable environment for our bathers throughout the summer.
The month also marks the start of the 2011 football season. Many of us will be traveling to high school, college and professional football stadiums. Keep in mind that you can begin your day with a round of golf at The Hills and top it off with an evening of enjoyment and excitement while cheering your team to victory.
Needless to say, there is much excitement being generated from our own Ragin' Cajuns and new coach, Mark "The Energized Hud" Hudspeth. Let us all get behind our Cajuns and cheer them on to victory in the Sun Belt! If Coach Hud's coaching skills are anywhere as good as his singing talent, the Cajuns will be a big winner! Hope to see you at Cajun Field on Saturday nights. Good luck to all of our athletes and please members, be safe!
The hot, balmy days of summer descended upon The Hills with vengeance. Mother Nature has not been very forgiving with her rain falls and sweltering heat, not to mention the 6" water main that feeds our irrigation system that burst during the recent dry spell. Cory and his staff have been pushed to the limits. Even when the odds appeared to be stacked against us, our course crew was able to deliver a well conditioned golfing venue. They have been first-class attendants of our playgrounds.
One final request – “we are still in need of club members to come play in our backyard”. Our membership rolls have grown, but our recruiting efforts should not shut down at this point in time. As we ease into the fall/winter months, let us keep the momentum going – our membership drive at The Hills is a never ending process. We need your help to keep the ball rolling - the club membership benefits from an increased membership roll!
Have a minute? Drop me a line at jjguilbeau@yahoo.com to offer suggestions that would benefit your club. Your voice and concerns are important to us!

BREAKING NEWS
It is with much pleasure that I announce to our membership and guests a major project that is scheduled to begin late September or early October. After 3 plus years of meeting, discussing, planning, surveying, engineering, designing, and a lot of teeth grinding and tongue biting, work on Phase I of Coulee Bend (a public right-away) will begin, weather permitting. We will see a complete transformation of the coulee from green #5 to tee box #6. Phase II of the coulee restoration will follow, given the availability of funds, from tee box #6 to Dan DeBaillon Coulee (near Domingues Sand and Gravel on Moss street).
The Coulee Bend project could not have been possible without the due diligence of a number of individuals. The driving force behind this restoration project was led by Mr. Jay Castille, City/Parish Councilman for District 2. Jay was like a pesky fly on a pie who never said never, and never took NO for an answer. He persisted/endured in his drive to see this project through the arduous approval process. I certainly would be remiss if I did not also extend our thanks to our Lafayette Consolidated Government's Public Works Department. It is a real pleasure working with such a professional staff.
Please take the time, if you should see any of these individuals, to extend your personal thanks. One final request, be patient, the project will happen to completion, but sometimes the speed of the work is not at a level we all desire. The impact on our golf course, from an aesthetic point of view, will be dramatic!
Merci beaucoup Jay, Tom, Larry, Jeff, surveyors, planners, engineers, & LCG staff!

Area Play for August was held at Spanish Trail. Cheryl Neu won second low gross in the First Flight. Next month's Area Play will be in Abbeville. Try to sign up.
The state WLGA will hold the Mid-Am tournament at the new golf course near Lake Charles, National Golf Club. There should be forms for this tourney in the locker room. The date for the event is October 14 through 16.
The mail out for the Susan Komen has been sent so be looking for this information in your mail. There is also a sheet for sponsors. If you know of a business that can help with a sponsorship, please sign them up. This will help our bottom line and help increase donations sent to local and national chapters of the Susan Komen Foundation.
Hope to see everyone soon.

The MGA 9 - 9 tournament was a fun time for all involved. Congratulations to Steve Thomas and Mark Jeffery for their hole-in-one. Steve used a wedge on 13 for his ace, and Mark used a 9 iron on 16 for his ace. Congratulations to all the winners in the event.
We also thank our sponsors for the door prizes: Copelands Restaurant, Prejeans Restaurant, Deanos Pizzarea, Corner Bar, Edwin Watts, The Golf Connection, Golf Balls.com, Bryan Estes Chase Design Group, Everett Daigle Integrity Industries, John Helwig RPS Cementing, John Angelle Hub City Ford, Roddy Breaux Angelle Materials (Angelle Concrete), and Jolies Bistro.
Find a partner for the MGA 9-9-9 November 12th. Don't forget the Club Championship September 24-25.
We have set the date for the used club sale. October 29th from 9:00 - 2:00. We will have a tent set up on the driving range that morning. You will need to mark your used club(s) with the following: full name, asking price, phone number.
The final details will be included in the September newsletter. Gather up those used clubs. Make your wife happy and make room for more used clubs because we all know we have to have the latest and greatest. The MGA Board members will handle the sale that day for a 10% commission, which goes to the MGA. We were also able to get the Branch and possibly the Scott Golf Associations to get involved with the sale. They will handle their own tents, but the good news is the MGA will get a 10% commission on their sales also. We are planning to publicize this event, so hopefully we can get some new members at The Hills. A special set of clubs has been generously donated by John Helwig. The clubs will be on display during the sale and will be auctioned off in the Clubhouse after the sale, with the proceeds to go to the MGA. A very special thanks to John!
Plans are in the works for an MGA steak night. We are planning this event to coincide with an LSU televised football game and when UL is out of town. It should be a good time for all. We will notify everyone via email when all the details are finalized.
If you can't bring your "A" game, bring your "C" game, because most of your buddies will do the same. You just have to know who to bet with (guess the author)? **** hint**** Don't sing it, bring it !!!!!!!!!
See you on the course.

We want to thank everyone for participating in the MGA tournament last month. We had a great turnout, some exciting golf and some great prizes to make the day a success. We want to thank the MGA officers and John Helweg for going out on their own time to find those prizes to make the tournament fun for all who participated.
MGA 9-9 results are as follows:
1st flight: 1st place- Joe Myhand and Travis Hebert; 2nd place- Brett Myhand and Leonard Marks; 3rd place- Ron Naomi and Kyle Naomi
2nd flight: 1st place- Byron Alleman and Mark Jeffery; 2nd place- Ken Forsse and A.J. Roeling; 3rd place- Jerry Thomas and Stephen Thomas
3rd flight: 1st place- Thomas Turner and Mike Turner; 2nd place- Danny Duhon and Wayne Shullaw; 3rd place- John Helweg and Charlie Fox
Again, thanks to everyone who participated.
We still have 2 more MGA events left. In September we have the Club Championship and in November we have the MGA 9-9-9 Appreciation Tournament. If you did not participate in the August event and want to participate in the next two, contact the Proshop.
I will be raffling off golf lessons each month until the end of the year. My daughter has to raise money for gymnastics meets and I have been recruited. The tickets are $5 each and a name will be pulled the last day of each month. If you want a chance at a free lesson, the tickets are in the Proshop. My daughter thanks you!
If you are part of the MGA or LGA and have a handicap in the computer, you MUST enter ALL scores. It is in the spirit of the game to post all scores for fair competition. The Handicap Committee will be monitoring and will enter a low score penalty for anyone who fails to enter their scores. The penalty score established by the USGA Handicap System will be the lowest differential score posted in the players scoring record (Rule 8-4 c The USGA Handicap System).
Play more golf!

How To Speed Up Your Pace of Play on the Golf Course
Here's How: Choose a set of tees appropriate to your skill level. Playing from the championship set of tees when that is not really your game can only add strokes and time.
Hole in one
Congratulations to Mark Jeffrey and Stephen Thomas on their recent aces at The Hills. Mark's ace was registered on August 13, 2011 on the par 3, 16th hole (163 yds.) and Stephen's ace was registered on the same day on the par 3, 13th hole (140 yds). The aces were witnessed by golfing partners Byron Alleman and Jerry Thomas while participating in the MGA's 9-9 tourney.

The Hills' Caddie (August 2011)
From The Board
The hot, balmy days of summer are steaming up The Hills’. Mother Nature has not been very forgiving with her daily rain falls and sweltering heat. Our hat is tipped to Cory and his staff who have really been pushed to the limits. They have been first-class stewards of our course. Even with their “backs nailed to the wall at times” by Mother Nature, the course crew has been able to deliver a well conditioned golfing venue.
The 2011 Club Championship will be contested the weekend of September 26-27. The men, ladies and seniors will crown their respective club champion. Men and ladies ages 17 plus, now is the time to sharpen your game leading up to this most coveted club event!
Don’t forget – the swimming facility is open until 7:45 PM each Thursday evening for your family’s pleasure. What a grand way to cool off at the day’s end after a tough day at the office or following hours of work in the yard with a dip in the pool. Let The Hills’ pamper you!
Another highly successful Junior Golf Clinic was conducted by Chad at The Hills’. Chad is a very skilled teacher of the game of golf and his ability to relate to the youngsters was in evidence during his clinic days. The Hills’ is very fortunate to have the Massie Academy on its premise and a professional such as Chad. Thanks for giving your time to these young and upcoming golfers and perhaps the future membership of AHCC.
One final comment – “we are still in need of another 20 members to come play in our backyard”. Our membership rolls continue to grow, but our recruiting efforts should not shut down at this point in time. As we ease into the fall/winter months, let us keep the momentum going – our membership drive at The Hills’ is a never ending process. We need YOU, our members, to keep the membership ball rolling!
We trust that The Hills’ will continue to be your family‘s country club of choice! Members and guests are appreciated and valued at the club.

The City of Lafayette recently held an open championship at two of it’s golf courses. The event is open to anyone, even people from outside of Lafayette. The turnout for the ladies division was low, but there were some quality players. Even though it’s intimidating to play with a scratch golfer or a former college player, the amount that can be learned from them is worth it.
Next month’s area play will be held at Spanish Trail. They are a great group of ladies, so try to sign up to play.
I met with John Guilbeau recently to start planning the Susan Komen tournament. It will be held on Monday, October 31, so start getting your team together. Also, if you can help with door prizes or hole sponsorships, please let me know. This will be our last Susan Komen tournament because the ladies from Indian Hill wish to have it back. They started it many years ago and when their course fell on hard times we took it over.
I will get with management to discuss when we can host our Annual Crawfish Tournament. It was skipped this year because of conflict with other tournaments so be looking for that information.
Hope to see everyone soon!

Our 9-9 MGA Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, August 13th. The entry fee of $40 includes cart, breakfast and prizes. Two mulligans per player will be sold at $5. Start making plans to play in this event. We will continue with the prizes for closest to the holes and of course there will be plenty of door prizes. Contact the Pro Shop to register your team.
I think everyone would agree that the guys have worked hard to get the course in good shape, especially having to fight somewhat of a drought and the hot temperatures.
Remember that we will allow non-MGA golfers to play our tournaments, if Chad can verify a Louisiana handicap. If you can't find a partner for the tournament, leave your name with the Pro Shop and Walter or Jim will try to pair you up with someone.

Pace of Play and Weekend/Holiday Tee Times - We need the help of each of you to assure the weekends or holidays run as smooth as possible. When making a tee time(s), please make the appropriate amount of time(s) for the number of people you are expecting in your group. It is most important that your group is ready to tee off at the assigned time.
We are running into a problem with a tee time(s) being made, extra people showing up and the group(s) not moving to the tee box when the starter informs them that their group is up on the box. To accommodate everyone, we have been trying to squeeze the extra player(s) of the group in, but as we get busier we will no longer be able to accommodate the extra golfer(s). Those showing up late will loose their spot on the tee box. On a typical Saturday morning, we have tee times from 7:00 to about 11:00 with out any breaks. When we try to squeeze 2 or 3 extra groups in, it delays the play and when groups do not show up on time it backs up everyone’s starting time.
We will also monitor the number of players in a group teeing off between 8:30 and 10:30. To have a good steady pace, we will try to have threesomes, foursomes or fivesomes only between these hours. We understand that players will back out on their group and if that happens we may have to move your group around a bit to assure the pace of play stays steady. It is important that you call the Pro Shop in advance to book a tee time and state the number of players in your group. On the flip side, please let us know if you must cancel your tee time.
I want to mention something about pace of play. We have different groups who move around the course at different speeds. As long as the pace is a 4 hour pace, we will not speed groups up to accommodate those who are use to playing in 3 hours. If your group is moving at a pace greater than 4 hours, you will be asked to speed up. If you plan on playing on a holiday or weekend, expect the pace to slow down to a 4 hour 15 minute to a 4 hour 30 minute pace. Members will bring a non-golfing family to play and we get more players who request tee times. For those reasons, the pace will slow down, so be patient. We expect this to happen through out the year and we want our members to expect it especially when playing on a holiday or weekend.
Rule of Thumb - use the groups ahead of you and behind you to gauge your pace. If the group that teed off directly in front of you is pulling away - putting a full hole's distance between them and your group - you need to speed up. If there's no one in front of you holding you up, but you are holding up those behind you, either speed up or allow the trailing group to play through.
Please marshal your group so that all can enjoy their round of golf at a comfortable pace!
Play more golf!

Safety measures you can take to avoid being hit by lightning while on the golf course:
* First rule of thumb - don’t tee off in bad weather. * Seek shelter at the first sign of a thunderstorm. * If possible, get off the golf course or go to a course shelter. * Don’t stand under a lone tree. This is where most golfers are injured or killed. * Stay away from water and power lines. * Stay away from your golf clubs. * Move away from your golf cart. * If stranded in the open, go to the lowest area such as a coulee or ditch. Crouch down and roll up in a ball with feet on the ground. Do not lie down! * Parents should properly instruct their youth golfers on the dangers of lightning and the proper safety precautions that they should take in the event of a storm. * Above all, exercise common sense when it comes to lightning storms – don’t attempt to second guest “Mother Nature”. She is very unpredictable! * Think safety and take NO chances!
Now, go out, have fun, and keep your eye on the little white ball!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA - Independence Day, or the 4th of July, is the adoption by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, of the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the severance of the allegiance of the American colonies to Great Britain. It is the greatest secular holiday of the United States, observed in all the states, territories and dependencies. It is our opportunity to celebrate the courage and faith of our founding fathers in their pursuit of liberty. God Bless America!
4th of July - Club is Open! Let The Hills’ serve as your family gathering place for the summer.
Once again Chefs Robert and Francis Arceneaux prepared their traditional crawfish etouffe served over fried catfish this past June 2nd at our annual Guest Chef Night. We packed the house as we were treated to a terrific meal! Marie and her staff did an excellent job in pampering each of us with their excellent service!
The 43rd Annual Knights of Columbus International Golf Tournament is now in the books. Msgr. Teurlings K. C. Council 3202 and Acadian Hills C. C. proudly served as host for this international event. Congratulations to Tournament Chairmen Larry Miller and Francis Knight and their committee on a very well run tournament.
Over 203 golfers from far and near converged on The Hills’ during the week of July 14-17. License plates from Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Nebraska, Pennsylvania, and Texas were visible in the parking lot. Our neighbors to the north, Canada (Ontario), also supported golfers. Oh yes, Louisiana was well represented in the field including members from The Hills'.
Merci beaucoup Msgr. Teurlings Council for affording us this opportunity to host such a prestigious event and we certainly extend a warm Cajun thank you to all of our guests from across the country for visiting with us. Wow, the spirited stories were flying around after each round of golf in the dining room – they sure did let the good times roll! Even the sultry heat did not dampen their spirits.
The life line of this club is in its membership. To that end, we have become somewhat stagnate in our growth, so we are appealing to you, our members, to help us grow our club membership while holding down club fees. We have outlined a membership incentive program that we hope you will buy into and promote among family, friends and colleagues with an invitation to them to join us at The Hills in a family, friendly country club atmosphere.
All current active AHCC members in good standing who signs-up a new member(s) will be rewarded with 5 free golf carts for each new member and will have his/her name entered in a drawing for set of irons of choice (3-9 and PW) with Golf Bag. Make certain that the new member who completes the application for full membership places your name as his/her sponsor.
Student memberships will not be eligible for this incentive program. Also, the reactivation of a membership placed on "hold" is not eligible.
All one has to do is sign up a relative, friend or business associate to become eligible to win. The more new members you sign up the more chances you can benefit from the program while helping your club to grow.
I would like to end with a final plea of hope as we enter the 2011 hurricane season. It is our hope and prayer that we will all be spared the furor of another disastrous hurricane season – let there be tranquility. Please pray for our friends and neighbors who have been torn by recent flooding and tornadoes.

Area Play in June was held at Indian Hills Country Club. The turn-out was good considering how hot is was. Deanie, Gaynal and Cheryl participated. Cheryl won with an 82. This was remarkable since after three holes she was six over par. Look for the sign-up sheet in the lady’s locker room for next month’s Area Play.
Life is so short and we have to live every minute of it. Two of our members have recently had spouses with medical problems. Golf has been such a large part of their married lives together. They have also been part of Acadian Hills' golf family for a long time. I really feel part of a family here at The Hills' and I hope whatever trials they may encounter, that we as a group will be there for them.
Hope to see everyone soon.

HYDRATE ON THE COURSE - With the early heat we have been getting, I wanted to discuss staying hydrated on the course. In a single day you should drink half of your body weight in ounces of water. If you weigh 200 pounds, you need 100 ounces and if you weigh 100 pounds, you need 50 ounces…. the adage of 8 glasses a day may be to much for some and not enough for others.
Now, on days you will play golf, drink 25% of your daily intake before you get to the course. Drink 50% while you are on the course and the other 25% throughout the rest of the day. You should take three swigs per hole and fill your water bottle up every three to five holes. For a little extra boost, put a pinch of sea salt in your water on number one and another pinch on number 10. If you can taste the salt, you put too much. Sea salt has the minerals, electrolytes and trace elements your body looses with none of the sugar you find in other drinks. Our brain is made up of 85% water, when we dehydrate we loose focus and to shoot those low numbers, we need to stay focused.
Play more golf!

Sometimes we do not understand or give full credit to the power of “Mother Nature” and the impact that she can have on our golf course conditioning. Her furor can range from drought conditions to monsoons, freezing to down right hot temps, from breeze to hurricane force winds. We all to well know the scenarios!
The temperature is now conducive for the grass to grow and it is growing. We need 60-degree nights and we are finally getting the right temperatures. We were a month and a half behind last year in growing in the golf course due to the cool nights that lasted late into May and then came the drought.
To try and offset the lack of rain, we are having to water during the day... sorry for the inconvenience. Our watering pattern is evening and morning right now and you may even see some spot watering during the afternoon hours to cool down hot spots. We adapt and change given the weather conditions making certain that we stay on top of the situation in order to maintain as green of a golf course as possible.
You can only get the product as good as “Mother Nature” allows. Yes we did spread fertilizer and other chemicals on the golf course, aerated the greens, verticut and top dressed the greens in the usual time frame and so forth, but without some intervention from nature, all human efforts can be impeded. Our mowing and rolling patterns continue as scheduled each week.
Now, go out, have fun, and keep your eye on the little white ball!

Set aside time for practice. Taking a lesson is the easy part when you want to improve your game. The real work starts when you walk away from the lesson. We all want to hit the ball better. Just as with anything else, it takes practice. Schedule time to play and schedule time to practice.
The swing changes have to be engrained. The only place to do that is the range. Enjoy playing golf while you are on the golf course. Go to the driving range to work on the new swing. If you put the time in practicing, you will be rewarded on the course. Trying to incorporate a new swing while worrying about out of bounds stakes and water hazards can make for a miserable day. It takes 21 days to form a habit. Give yourself time and you will see a difference.
Check the calendar for tournament dates!

As summer approaches and play on the golf increases, I would like to remind our golfers, especially our young golfers, of a few steps that can be taken to preserve the playing field.
Players should ensure that no damage is done to the putting green when putting down bags or the flagstick. Do not drop the flagstick onto the putting surface.
In order to avoid damaging the hole, do not stand too close to the hole. One should take care during the handling of the flagstick and the removal of a ball from the hole. The head of a club should not be used to remove a ball from the hole.
Players should not lean on their clubs when on the putting green, particularly when removing the ball from the hole.
Please do not drag your feet when on the putting surface and do not take practice swings while on the green.
Now, go out, have fun, and keep your eye on the little white ball!

Memorial Day - Club is Open! The long weekend with the last Monday in May is unofficially the start of summer. Parades and other special events celebrate Memorial Day itself, whose purpose is to remember those who've died in war. Please be safe in all of your activities! “Happy Spring to all!” Looks like the workings of a very busy beehive around The Hills lately, especially after one of the worst winters on record. Cory and his staff continue to make course improvements in order to present to our golfers a well manicured, groomed golf course. A tip of the hat to him and his staff.
Mark your calendar, MGA Cajun 4-Ball is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, June 4th & 5th with a practice round on Friday, June 3rd. Start thinking about your team partner! By now all should have received tournament information. Help grow this event by inviting other golfers to participate and even grow your club membership rolls. The AHMGA along with our staff are planning a most interesting event.
Please take the time to invite a friend or colleague to the club on your next visit - let them experience The Hills. We still have a number of very special club memberships reserved for these potential new members.
Summer is just around the corner. Wow, seems like just yesterday we closed the swimming pool and said bye to our bathers. Marcella will again direct our swimming pool activities for the upcoming season. Come out and take advantage of the facility.

We are having a great springtime. You can’t ask for better weather! The Twilight Scramble started on April 13th and the winning score was 8 under. Four women played and I hope more keep showing up. We really can help the men especially when we play the back nine.
There were two tournament this past month. The Senior State tournament was held at The Bluffs. The course was difficult, but a lot of fun. Deanie Stanford got a closest to the hole prize and second low gross in the Super Senior division. Others playing were Cheryl, Gaynal and Sue. The Wine and Roses tournament was held in Alexandria and our girls did great there. The team of Laura LeBlanc and Sue Broussard came out third in Championship flight and the team of Gaynal Alleman and Deanie Stanford came out fourth.
Just a reminder that Area Play is the second Tuesday of the month.

Spring has arrived and I believe every golfer will readily agree with me that it has been another unforgiving winter. The rain, cold, and wind were not very enticing – not even to the “hard crusted golfer. We are gradually emerging, however, from those gray skies of the past few months. We will again have the opportunity to challenge each other in a round of golf, socialize and exchange stories, either in the dinning room or at poolside. We all look forward to the explosion of spring blossoms in all of its grandeur and all of the wildlife critters once again scurrying around.
We are moving into the heart of our club season with many planned events. I challenge each of you to find sometime to participate either in the LGA Ladies' Area Play, the MGA Cajun 4-Ball, the Twilight Scrambles, or in one of the weekly Pick-A-Games. If not one of these games, then simply come out and enjoy The Hills!
In the way of a reminder, a new member is always a welcomed addition to our membership roles. A family membership at The Hills will allow one to not plan on making their next family vacation a one time adventure. A new member and his family can make The Hills’ a year-round vacation spot at a very affordable price. Introduce a friend, family member or business associate to the club today.
I could not end without handing out much appreciated kudos to the staff of Acadian Hills. They are the day-in and day-out work-a-bees who make our stay and play at the Club enjoyable. We applaud the staff for their work!

Finally the Spring has arrived and just in time. The first Area Play was held at Acadian Hills on March 15. The weather could not have been better. Our LGA was well represented. Laura LeBlanc won low gross in first flight with an 83! Deanie Stanford had second low net and Sue Broussard had low putts. We welcomed many ladies from Indian Hills, Spanish Trail, Abbeville C.C. and Eunice C.C. Next month Area Play will be at Eunice C.C., so don’t forget to sign up in the ladies locker room. Once again I want to mention the email account, ahmga1@yahoo.com, please pass on your concerns or comments. We want to hear from you.
If you're like me and a lot of other golfers who always buy the latest and greatest golf clubs, I think we have the solution to your collection of unused clubs. We are planning a "Golf Club Garage Sale"! The MGA board will have a tent set up at the course, and everyone can bring their used clubs and put them out for others to see. We are in the planning stages right now, but will keep everyone posted. Of course the MGA will only charge a small 10% fee for manning the tent and selling your equipment. Not a bad deal considering our wives will be happy for us to get rid of all our unused clubs. More to come on this event.

Don’t play a shocking golf round!
* Above all, exercise common sense when it comes to lightning storms – don’t attempt to second guest “Mother Nature. She is very unpredictable! * Think safety and take NO chances!

When planning your 2011 family vacation do not make it a one time adventure. You and your family can make The Hills’ a year-round vacation spot at a very affordable price. Join in the fun today!
As AHCC ushers in its 49th season of golf and family fun at a venue where nature and sport reside in harmony, I take this opportunity to thank all of you for being a part of our growth. We certainly look forward to serving the Acadiana community for many more years to come in a family friendly, fun atmosphere.
You, the members, have been the backbone of The Hills’ over these years and for this we do appreciate your contributions – there have been many. Your MGA and LGA have been very supportive and responsive to club needs and deserve a big round of applause.
I also tip my hat to the hard working staff members of AHCC. While we are out enjoying ourselves on the course or in the swimming pool or in the dining room, staff is working diligently behind the scenes to make our visit an enjoyable and pleasant experience. A hearty thanks to each of them!
The club staff has once again planned a season of fun-filled activities for you. Activities will include, but not limited to youth parties, golf clinics, demo days, Guest Chef Nights, as well as some challenging golf events sponsored by our LGA and MGA. Look for announcements concerning these and other club enriching activities as more information is posted on the bulletin boards, our newsletter and through the eBlast system.
Speaking of the eBlast system. Have you enrolled your email into the AHCC information system? Over 1,500 other members and guests are already enrolled. Simply go to our website or email to me your email address to become a part of the eBlast system. Great way to remain current on activities at The Hills.
We have also introduced Facebook at The Hills. If you are into Facebook activities, then become a FAN today. You can sign up by going to Acadian Hills Country Club, click "I Like", and join us in some fun discussions - follow us on Facebook.

I hope everyone had a great holiday, but it’s time to get back to golf. We just need the weather to cooperate and soon.
This year we will pass on the Crawfish Tournament. There is a conflict with the Senior State Amateur Tournament, which will be April 4 and 5 at The Bluffs. Also, Oakbourne is bringing back its Lucille Heymann Tournament later in April, so that month seems pretty full. I spoke with John Guilbeau and he seems to agree that we should put our tournament efforts into the Susan Komen. It is for a great cause and participation seems to be high. We have been averaging well over 100 lady golfers in this event. The tentative date for the tournament is October 31 - that is right, Halloween Day. We pushed it back a little to give those who participate in the state Mid-Am time to recover, since that is a two day tournament.
In March we host the first Area-Play which is usually the second Tuesday of each month. Since there is a conflict with Mardi Gras, the date for the Area Play will be March 15. A sign up sheet will be in the locker room.
Lastly, take time to look in the photo album in our locker room. I added some new pictures that an old member, Helen Comeaux, gave to me. There are several from an earlier Crawfish Tournament, when we could actually afford boiled crawfish. Also, the winner was a very youthful Laura LeBlanc. There are some interesting pictures of the old clubhouse.
Hope to see you soon,

Hopefully the worst of the cold, wet weather is behind us, that means it is time to hit the course. The first MGA Tournament of 2011 is scheduled for March 12th.
As I mentioned in last months letter, we are trying to build the membership at Acadian Hills, which will also help our membership in the MGA. I call this a win-win situation! The tournament is going to be open to non-MGA and Acadian Hills members if Chad can verify a Louisiana handicap for that player. So invite a buddy, relative, colleague to this tournament, and let us show them what our Club has to offer.
There are a few things planned for the tournament including a breakfast starting at 7:00 AM followed by a shotgun start at 8:00 AM . There will be prizes for closest to the holes on all of the par 3's, along with a longest/straightest drive on hole #12. After the tournament we will be drawing for door prizes, must be present to win. Also, there will be a Meet & Greet from Noon to 2:00 with players from the Louisiana Icegators, and the Lafayette Wildcaters, so plan to stick around (kids are invited). There could be another surprise in store after the tournament, so stay tuned.
The entry fee is $40.00, so be sure to sign up with Pro Shop. If any MGA member is looking for a partner for the tournament we will have a list of single players available in the Pro Shop.
Just a reminder about the MGA email, ahmga1@yahoo.com. Feel free to send an email about any concerns or suggestions that you may have, we want to hear from the members.
One of the great things about Acadian Hills is that you can always find a game - there is a game at The Hills' each day of the week. There is the Lunch Bunch Game, Wally's Game, Down & Dirty Game, Senior Swatfest Game, and on Fridays at 1:00 a points game, blind draw teams at the end. Soon our Twilight Scramble Game will begin. Call the Pro Shop and ask Walter or Jim to sign you up for a game of choice or visit our website at www.acadianhills.com for more information.
This is the schedule for the 2011 AHMGA Golf Tournaments:
* March 12th, 6-6-6
* May 21st, 2-Man Scramble
* June 4th-5th, Cajun 4-Ball
* August 13th, 9-BB; 9-Scramble
* November 12th, 9-9-9
* CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE DETERMINED

Daylight Savings Time begins Sunday, March 13th. The pro shop and the range will remain open until 6 pm except for Sundays. The range will close at 5 pm on Sundays.
The new junior development program will start Saturday, March 5th. The clinic is held every Saturday through November. The cost is $100 per month. No pre-registration required – just show up with the weapon (club) of choice in hand!
Between The Bunkers
As play increases over the next several months; we want to send out a few friendly reminders.
1. Call before you come out to make sure we can get you on the course.
2. Do not start on number 10 without checking in the pro shop first.
3. Do not take longer than 5 minutes at the turn. If you stop to eat, you will loose your place on the course and may have a long wait before you can continue.
4. Please use the sand provided to fill you divots and repair ball marks on the greens.
5. Allow faster players to play through.
6. Keep carts outside the fairway makers near green and please do not drive carts up to the greens. Stay on the cart paths as much as possible.
7. Rake the bunker after your bunker shot.
Now, go out, have fun, and keep your eye on the little white ball!

T’is the time of the year to extend appreciation to so many and for so much as 2010 draws to a conclusion. Reeling from our Thanksgiving Day stuffing’s of turkey, dressing, yams, and buttery rolls, the staff and I offer a very warm and sincere ringing of thanks to each and every one of you, our members. A very special thanks to the men and women of the club's two respective golf associations. We acknowledge your value and importance to The Hills. A big thanks to outgoing MGA President, Gene Brackin, on a job well-done!
Santa’s shop is open at The Hills. It is never too early to begin your round of Christmas shopping. Santa and his caddies have been unloading their sleigh in the Pro Shop with great merchandise. Looking for an ace of a stocking stuffer as we approach the holidays? Want to introduce a family member, friend or business associate to AHCC as we approach the holidays? A membership in AHCC would be a winter wonderland of a gift for that special golfer!
What about something for that good neighbor or hard working employee? A gift certificate that can be used for a round(s) of golf might be the ideal gift. You can even tack on a little something special to that certificate - the golf cart.
Now, if you have a very special golfer whose game could use some fine tuning, perhaps a certificate for a lesson or two in the Massie Golf Academy at AHCC would make a most fitting gift. What a terrific way for that golfer to maintain a winter sharp golf game.
Whether entering your home through the chimney or the front door, the Acadian Hills Management Board and the staff of The Hills wish you and yours a Joyous Season and a Wonderful New Year. Please be safe in your travels!

On October 25 we had the Susan Komen Golf Tournament and it was a great success. The weather was beautiful and we had many volunteers. My special thanks to the men who helped with the rally hole, Gary and Richard. Anyone hitting the 16th green got a Susan Komen logo ball. Linda Giron and Betty Hollier helped with registration, Betty Bishop helped with the magazine sign-up table, and Laura Leblanc and Deanie Stanford helped with the mulligan table. Carol Delahoussaye helped with door prizes.
We had a strong showing from our own members. Cheryl Neu’s team won first place. Karen Wells’ team came in second and the team of Laura Leblanc, Sue Broussard, Carol Delahoussaye, and Gaynal Alleman came in fourth.
Our Christmas social will be held in the clubhouse on Tuesday, December 14. Marie and her staff will do most of the work and cooking, but we may need a few more dishes. Let me know if there is anything you would like to bring. There will be a sign up sheet in the locker room or you can call me (981-1285) to let me know if you are coming. We need a head count by the week before. If the weather is good we can play golf that morning or if the weather is bad we can meet for cards and socializing by 10 AM and eat at 12:30.

At The Hills, we are very fortunate to have active Ladies’ and Men’s Golf Associations that are very responsive and helpful to the club. They have undertaken numerous projects and activities that have served to strengthen and improve our facility. For over 48 years these men and women have been a pillar of strength! We at AHCC cannot thank them enough for their good work in hosting tourneys, socials, junior events, and providing leadership to the club. If you are not on their membership roles, then, sign up today!
We are all familiar with the Thanksgiving holiday as a time for family, feasting and football. All of these are great American institutions, but we soon forget too easily the real meaning of this national holiday. Yes, it is a time to celebrate privately in our homes, but it is also a time to give public thanks to God -- and not just for our material blessings, but for our freedom. Our earliest Thanksgivings were in times when that freedom was at its most vulnerable. It is a unique holiday for a unique nation. From the staff of AHCC, we send our special message to you and your family that all have a safe and happy Thanksgiving celebration.
While the foliage and grass on the golf course may fade into a dormant state, the golfer does not have to assume that same inactive status. AHCC prides itself in being a year round course with cool days creeping around the bend. The welcome change in weather may energize our golf game following the sluggish days of summer. Don’t become a stranger around the clubhouse!

From The Board
Wow – summer 2010 is history. Thanks to all members and guests for another successful summer at The Hills. I think staff is having slight withdrawals now that things have settled from the hustle and bustle of the summer months.
Pick A Game – any day of the week! Every day of the week there is at least one golf game being played. Members are asked to review the listing of available games, select a game of interest, sign up in the Pro Shop, and go out and have some fun. What a nice way to sharpen your golfing skills while interacting with members or developing new friendships. Who knows, you may even walk away with an extra dollar in your pocket! All are invited to join in the weekly challenges.
A gentle reminder to all voting age citizens. October 20th is Primary Election Day in our Pelican State. We will have the opportunity to go to the polls to select state, parish and city leaders. Please exercise your right to vote!
To those members of The Hills’ who have not registered their email address into our eList data bank, please do so. We are now able to reach over 1,500 subscribers with hurricane updates (courtesy of David Paul, TV 10), golf course conditions, open/close dates, club events/tournaments, Regions Pro Am status, and so forth. Please take the time today to register your email address via our website or send your request to me for entrance so you can receive timely information. PS: Update your profile as well – click on Members Only and just follow the instructions (www.acadianhills.com)!
We understand that we live in the shadow of a danger, Gulf of Mexico, over which we have no control; therefore, we continue to pray for a hurricane free season. That past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time, we ask for your healing.

It’s time to get your team together for the up-coming Susan Komen tournament. Please call me if you are having trouble finding a team, maybe I can help. Also you will find in the ladies locker room a sponsor sign-up sheet. John Guilbeau has lined up a few major sponsors, but we could use more. If you have a business or frequent a certain business, please ask them to be a hole sponsor. This is only $75 dollars and they each get recognition during the tournament.
September’s area play was held in Abbeville and Acadian Hills was well represented. Cheryl Neu won low gross in her flight and both Deanie Stanford and Elsie Evans won low net prizes in their flights. Next month’s area play will be at Squirrel Run.
Laura LeBlanc and Cheryl Neu recently participated in the Acadiana Cup. This year’s event was held in Victoriaville and Quebec, Canada. The golf courses were great, but some rainy weather was involved. Our team came up short, so the Cup was won by the Canadians. Next year’s event will be in Spain where we will team up with Canada against the Europeans.
Hope to see everyone soon.

Just like that, the summer is gone and the football season has arrived. If you are like me, you still haven't recovered from the winter. We have one more order of business before the clubs get brushed aside for the winter, the Club Championship. This year, the tournament will be held on October 9-10. The format is individual stroke play. The cost is $50 per player which includes cart for both days and prize money. Ladies, Men and Seniors will compete. REMEMBER.....You do not have to be a single digit handicap golfer to participate. The tournament will be flighted, so you will compete with golfers who play just like you.
I am asking for help from golfers who play in the different games we have during the week and over the weekends. Please call to sign up at least 30 minutes before your chosen game. We have a difficult time setting up groups and getting them started on time when someone walks up at the last minute to sign up. We want to accommodate everyone and it will be easier to do if we know you are participating ahead of time.
Thanks for your cooperation in advance.

The Hills' Caddie (September 2010)
From The Board
September – a very special month in many ways.
It marks the 8th anniversary of us occupying our new clubhouse facility and the 48th year of the birth of Acadian Hills Country Club.
The month also marks the start of the 2010 football season. Many of us will be traveling to high school, college and professional football stadiums. Keep in mind that you can begin your day with a round of golf at The Hills and top it off with an evening of enjoyment and excitement while cheering your team to victory. Good luck to all of our athletes and please members, be safe!
The hot, balmy days of summer descended upon The Hills with vengeance. Mother Nature has not been very forgiving with her daily rain falls and sweltering heat. Cory and his staff have been pushed to the limits. Even when the odds appeared to be stacked against us, our course crew was able to deliver a well conditioned golfing venue. They have been first-class attendants of our playgrounds.
The Acadian Hills website is currently under redesign by Course Trends, one of our marketing partners. The new site will be featured in HD (high definition). We hope to unveil the redesigned site on or about Labor Day. Stay tuned!
One final request – “we are still in need of club members to come play in our backyard.

We want to welcome two new members to our ladies' association. Bobbie Prejean lives in Breaux Bridge and was a member years ago and has just rejoined. Lauren Aillet is Larry’s daughter. She is a student at STM and needs to establish a handicap. She will be able to give the boys a run for their money. I have an updated member list that I will put in the locker room. Please take a copy with everyone’s number. I don’t have the dates from Chad yet as to when the club championship will be held, so be looking for the dates at the club house. In the last few years it has been held in September.
Don’t forget to get your team together for the Susan Komen tournament which will be held on Monday, October 25. Please contact me if you can help with prizes, cake, etc.

Without a doubt the oil disaster off the coast of Louisiana is making life most difficult for many good, hardworking people of Louisiana, several of whom make their living as commercial fishermen or in a related industry. It is sad to see Louisiana's state bird, the Brown Pelican, dying on the beaches loaded down with oil. I think we'll see far-reaching effects of this spill for years to come, and it is going to take much time to fully recover from the catastrophe. I ask that you keep all who are suffering from the disaster in your thoughts and prayers.
I would like to end with a final plea of hope as we enter the 2010 hurricane season. It is our hope and prayer that we will all be spared the furor of another disastrous hurricane season – let there be tranquility.

Now that the hot days are here, don’t forget to bring Florida water to help cool off during your round of golf. I’d hate for anyone to get heat stroke. With almost half of the year gone the race for the most birdies is very close. Laura LeBlanc has nine and Deanie Stanford has eight. Elsie Evans is trying to close in on them, she now has four.
Some of our ladies played in the tournament at Cypress Bend. They said the course was in great shape and I wish I could have gone. The team of Deanie, Elsie with Becky and Alice from another course placed with low net in Championship flight. Congratulations to them. The team with Laura, Carol, Sue and Gaynal also went. I hear the side trip to Alexandria was fun. I hear fishing was also included.
The Wednesday scrambles are up and running with usually five to six teams. I got to play with two new lady golfers one week and one named Gayle this last time. It is great to see ladies participating in this fun event.
Hope to see everyone soon.

Big thanks to all the people who made our Annual Cajun Four Ball Tournament a success. Congratulations to all the winners. Hope to see all of you again next year.
The weather has been hot, but the course is waiting for golfers. As a reminder, this extreme heat can quickly trigger dehydration. Depending upon weather conditions, a brisk walk may generate up to 16 ounces of sweat (a pound of water) to allow body cooling, and that water needs to be replaced. Drink plenty of water!
The next AHMGA golf tournament will be Saturday, August 14th - please mark your calendar. More information is forthcoming via our eBlast system.
Come see us at The Hills.

Don’t play a shocking golf round!
* Above all, exercise common sense when it comes to lightning storms – don’t attempt to second guest “Mother Nature. She is very unpredictable! * Think safety and take NO chances!
Now, go out, have fun, and keep your eye on the little white ball!

CONDOLENCES
On a belated note, the golfing community of The Hills’ mourns the passing (June 5, 2010) of a longtime friend, former USL Coach Nelson Stokley. Our prayers and thoughts are with him and the entire Stokley family at this time.
We also add to our condolence list Mrs. Marjorie Currey, the wife of member Bill who passed during the month of May. May she rest in peace.

Congratulations to TC Williams on his 2nd ace at The Hills. TC's ace was registered on June 6, 2010 on the par 3, 13th hole. Using a 6 iron, TC struck a Nike ball in a direct flight to the cup. The ace was witnessed by golfing buddies Don Suggs and Dee Lambert while participating in the Senior's Game.

NOTICE!
Golfers, please take the time to care for your playgrounds. The golf course is really starting to come into its own. With a little ‘TLC’ we can all contribute to the golf course conditioning. Start by filling all divots with sand on the tee box and follow-up that process in the fairways. Another good position to take is to try and maintain the 90 degree cart path to ball rule. Please adhere to the cart signage as you approach the green. One final suggestion, on wet days, stay on the cart paths as much as possible, but more importantly stay clear of the bare spots (mud) to avoid cutting ruts.
Cory and his staff are working diligently to deliver a well conditioned golf course. We can all help by following these basic rules……………
Memorial Day - Club is Open! The long weekend with the last Monday in May is unofficially the start of summer. Parades and other special events celebrate Memorial Day itself, whose purpose is to remember those who've died in war. Please be safe in all of your activities! Let The Hills’ serve as your family gathering place for the summer.
